Abstract
1,207,773. Making fasteners; bending. UNITED-CARR Inc. 17 March, 1969 [29March, 1968], No. 13871/69. Headings B3A and B3E. Apparatus for attaching parts to a workpiece comprises a die 212, a reciprocable punch 54 co-operable with the die to attach a part 2 to a workpiece, a press 56 for driving the punch, means for transporting parts from a dispersing means to the die 212, the transporting means including a part support plate 90, part guide means 96 and 98, a conveyer 258 for carrying the parts from the dispersing means to the support plate 90, and a part index mechanism mounted for linear, reciprocatory travel with respect to the support plate 90 and guide means 96 and 98, the indexing mechanism including part engaging means 150 and 174 for progressively and incrementally moving parts from the conveyer 258 to the die 212 when the punch 54 is in the up position, driving means for reciprocating the index mechanism 162 and control means including timing means which sequentially activate the press 56 and press driving means 162. Feed system.-The conveyer belt 258 transports the clips 2 from a vibratory hopper to a point where the leading clip is stopped by a hook 270 which is pulled away via a lug 282 and stop block 272 by the movement of a cam arm 248 acting on a trigger 278. The fastener is then moved into a track defined by the two guide rails 96 and 98 in front of the upper pusher 150. To activate pusher 150 a pivot cam actuator 206 is moved forwardly so that the free end of a cam arm 180 rides up on to the upper surface 210 of the actuator 206 and the cam arm 180 swings about a pin 183 toward the wall 186 of recess 184. This action rotates the pivot cam 206 clockwise as viewed in Fig. 12 and so moves the upper pusher 150 forward from a position C to a position B. Since pivot spring 182 tends to rotate the pivot cam 178 and upper pivot shaft 142 in a counterclockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 11, upper pivot arm 196 is also rotated. in the same direction. Thus via links 198, 200, 202 and 204 the upper pivot arm 196 drives shaft 144 counterclockwise as viewed in Fig. 11 which moves the fingers 174 forward from position B to position A. In moving forward the clip 2 deflects spring-loaded detents 124 and 126 into the guide rails 96 and 98 and engages the rear edge of lip 238 on top plate 216. Simultaneously the forward faces of lugs 168 and 170 on front carriages 134 and 136 engage bumper 242 on the stop bar 220 of the die plate assembly forcing the die plate and tip plate forward against the bias of springs 222 until the forward edge of the die plate lies flush with the forward edge 118 of the base-plate 90. This slight forward movement allows the clip to move beyond the detents 124 and 126 while still under lateral bias of pressure plate 130. Press and die operation.-The piston arm of air cylinder 76 is driven forwardly as viewed in Fig. 7 thus rotating actuator lever 62 and torque bar 60 in a clockwise direction as viewed in Fig. 5 via links 64 and 68 and joint 66 so that the punch drive lever 82 depresses the press head. The punch 54 engages the clip at position A and acting in co-operation with the die plate 214 crimps the clip about the forward edge of the workpiece.
