Abstract

779,707. Sealing bale ties. BORBE, E. Dec. 3, 1954 [Dec. 3, 1953], No. 35149/54. Class 146(2). A device for tightening and clamping hoop irons comprises a lever operated locking and tightening mechanism for the hoop, and a lever operated clamping mechanism for joining the hoop ends by a seal, the latter lever 14 serving, in one stroke, (a) to convey a seal from a magazine to the clamping mechanism which includes bending pliers and an embossing plunger, (b) to lower the pliers with the seal over the overlapping hoop ends and bend flaps on the seal about the hoop ends, and (c) to lower the embossing plunger relatively to the pliers to crimp the seal, and when returned to the idle position to return the embossing plunger and then to open and return the pliers. The hoop is locked in channel 3 by means of lever 7, and tightened by lever 9 which operates a toothed tightening roll. In the idle position part 24 of lever 7 holds lever 18 as in Fig. 4, and the latter through 26, 27 holds lever 19 so as to lock lever 14. When lever 7 is moved, freeing lever 18, the latter is swung by spring 23, and swings lever 19 reversely, until part 18a engages hoop 4 in channel 3. If hoop 4 is of correct width levers 18, 19 are positioned so that lever 14 is free, but if the hoop is missing, misplaced, or of wrong dimension lever 18 is positioned so that lever 18 or lever 19 locks lever 14. When shaft 30, which forms part of the clamping mechanism, is rotated by lever 14, cam 33 thereon engaging rollers 34, 35 on housing 6 causes the shaft, in slots 32, and hence the clamping mechanism to move vertically. Control arm 40 rotatable about shaft 30 acts through arm 46 and lever 48 to reciprocate the stepped sliding feed member 51, and is driven by shaft 30 through a coupling comprising a leaf spring 42 with a shaped nose 43 engaging arm 40, at completion of feed, or if resistance is encountered arm 40 ceases to move with spring 42, and is returned by spring 45, Fig. 13 (not shown). Slide 51, shown in idle position in Fig. 15, is slidable beneath the magazine in which seals 55, constructed as in Fig. 16, are pressed downwardly by spring 57 with the lowermost seal 55a straddling step 66. When the slide is actuated the rear edges of step 66 partially removes seal 55a which drops on to step 67 when the slide returns to idle position, and in the next feeding stroke seal 55a on step 67 is fed to the clamping mechanism, and the next seal 55b collected on step 67. Cam 73 on shaft 30 engages roller 76 in the assembly of the embossing plunger 74 and moves the plunger vertically within the clamping unit relatively to shaft 30 and the plier jaws. An embossing die consisting of two flat tongues 78a, Fig. 11, 78b (not shown) is attached to the lower end of plunger 74. A flat cutter 79 reciprocates vertically between plunger 74 and the side wall of the clamping unit to cut the hoop. The spring pressed pivoted jaws 83, 84 of the pliers projecting downwardly from the clamping device have rollers 85, 86 engaging the sides of plunger 74, channels to receive the tongues of the embossing die, and grooves 89, 90 to guide the seal. The jaw surfaces opposite the die tongues form the embossing matrix. Downward movement of plunger 74, by cam 73, at first closes jaws 83, 84, but when rollers 85, 86 engage parallel portions of the plunger walls the plunger continues to move without affecting the jaws. Cams 33, 73 and plunger 74 are so shaped that in the operation of lever 14 through 180 degrees, the seal is fed between 0-30 degrees, the clamping unit is lowered between 30-75 degrees, and after 75 degrees the plunger 74 moves, first closing the pliers and then crimping.
