Abstract

1,099,135. Closing bags and tubular casings. J. J. FRANK. June 8, 1965 [June 8, 1964], No. 24243/65. Heading B8C. A machine for clinching a pliable fastener around an object, e.g. a twisted bag neck or a bundle of straight wires, comprises upper and lower dies, a frame mounting an upper die support, above the lower die, and having a fastener inlet passage and means for supplyng fasteners in file at the passage, the upper die being driven down to engage and separate the fastener and deliver it to the lower die face where it is pressed, by the complemental die faces, around the object, the upper die returning to its original position. The fasteners G are fed laterally from a magazine, Fig. 1 (not shown), into the cut-away portion 22 of groove 11 in a die housing D, in which groove a clinching die E reciprocates, its upward movement being limited by the engagement of a stud 14 in a slot 15 in the housing D. The housing is reciprocable in the machine frame C against the resistance of a spring-loaded friction block 6, its upward movement being restricted by a stud 9 abutting the end of a groove 10. When the upper die E is moved downward, e.g. by a fluid pressure motor, its face 21 engages a fastener which is guided down the recessed edges of the groove 11. The housing D remains stationary until a shoulder (16), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the die E engages the toe 17 of a spring-biased dog 18 when the die and housing move together, Fig. 3 (not shown), until the lower die F, on which rests the bag neck, is almost reached, when the tail of the dog 18 engages a shoulder 24. The toe 17 then releases the shoulder 16 and the die moves alone to deliver the fastener legs into the double grooves (23), Fig. 10 (not shown), in the lower die face, pressing the fastener between the die faces to form a helical seal around the bag neck. The upper end of die E then abuts a stop 27 on the housing D and they continue down to finally crimp the fastener around the neck. Simultaneously, a blade 28 co-operates with a blade on the lower die to sever the excess end portion of the neck. The upper die and housing are then returned to their original positions.
