A carton of the form shown in Fig. 5 is closed by a mechanism which comprises a conveyer 42, Fig. 1, provided with squaring blocks between which the cartons are transversely positioned, and closing ploughs 44, 46 each of which comprises plates 56, 58 attached to C-shaped brackets 50 and a system of wing cams and guide bars for carrying out the various folding operations. Fig. 7 shows the first operation wherein the side walls 20, 22 of the carton are moved between guide plates 64, 66 and tabs 36 encounter a cam 92 to cause downward folding to a substantially vertical position. With continued movement of the carton the lower flap 30 rides up on a wing cam 110 to the closed position and is retained in this position by a finger 112, Fig. 9. After folding of flap 30 a depending wing cam 120 folds downwardly the upper flap 28 and a bar 126 guides tabs 36 towards arcuate slots 38 which are situated substantially on the crease line 31 between the side wall 22 and lower flange 30 of each carton. Completion of the closing is carried out by a position adjustable presser 140, Fig. 3, which causes entry of the tabs 36 within slots 38 and a crimping shoe assembly 150, heated by an assembly 174, which by means of a lever movable by the carton against the action of a spring 170 firmly closes the carton. The carton is thereafter crimped by members 180, 182, the member 182 being rotatable about a capscrew 186 against the action of a spring 190 and provided with a ridge 188 which engages the side wall 22 of the carton adjacent the crease line 31.
