Abstract
1,179,229. Ignition systems. R.C.A. CORP. Jan.17, 1969 [Jan.24, 1968], No.2766/69. Heading F1B. An ignition system comprises a storage capacitor 50 and a switching device 62 connected in series with each other and with an ignition coil winding 68 and means for causing the switching device to become conductive periodically during operation of the engine. The system farther comprises means responsive to the voltage across the capacitor for adjusting the capacitor charging means to maintain the voltage across the capacitor substantially at a predetermined value, while the switching device is non-conductive and means for disabling the charging means while the switching device is conductive. The adjustable charging means may include an oscillator having adjustable feedback means. The switching device 62 may comprise a silicon controlled rectifier. Instead of a pair of contact-breaker points 44 and 46, other means may be provided for applying positive pulses to the control electrode of the SCR 62 and oscillator disabling voltages to the base of the transistor 34.
