Abstract

1457897 Generating ignition voltages MOEY KENG LUM 28 May 1974 [16 July 1973] 33827/73 Heading F1B Apparatus for generating an ignition voltage for application to the spark-plugs of an internal combustion engine comprises an oscillator 1 which is actuable in response to the arrival of the piston at a predetermined point on the compression stroke to produce an oscillatory signal and which is further actuable in response to the arrival of the piston at a predetermined point on the power stroke to cease production of the oscillatory signal and a thyristor SCR whose trigger electrode is connected to receive the oscillatory signal, which thyristor controls the charging and discharging of a capacitor C through the primary winding of an ignition coil 6. The oscillator may be a relaxation oscillator and may be associated with a transistor (not shown) which is effective to alter the circuit constants of the oscillator to thereby start and stop oscillation thereof. The transistor is controllable by means of a contact breaker 2 of the engine. The transistor may be programmable uni-junction transistor and the relaxation oscillator may include a programmable unijunction transistor. The conventional distributer may be replaced by an electronic circuit in which selection of each spark-plug is achieved elec- tronically using one oscillator for each spark-plug
