Abstract

1,178,182. Earth continuity couplings. JERROLD ELECTRONICS CORP. 30 June, 1967 [15 July, 1966], No. 30230/67. Heading H2E. A threaded hard metal sleeve insert 10 for helping to secure conduit to a metal wall 12 has a cylindrical body with external threads 14 to engage with threads 11 in an aperture in the wall and a radially outwardly extending flange 15 whose outer surface 16 is tapered at an angle of 9 to 15 degrees, preferably 12 degrees, with respect to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve. A taper is also provided on the outer surface 24 of the flange, at right-angles to the tapered surface 16, to produce a hard sharp ridge 25. The aperture in the wall has a counterbore 13 at the end which receives the sleeve unit, the diameter D of this counterbore being such that when the sleeve insert is fitted the tapering surface 16 of the flange 15 comes into direct contact with the wall and grinds into position producing a good electrical connection. The hard ridge 25 projects sufficiently from the wall to bite into the surface 26 of the connector 22 when it is screwed into position in the sleeve insert to produce a further good electrical connection. An 0-ring 28 provides a secondary seal. The sleeve insert is preferably made of stainless steel for use with an aluminium wall. To eliminate air-flow through the threads of the couplings they are sealed with a suitable sealant after installation.
