Abstract

1,178,099. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 8 Nov., 1968 [11 Nov., 1967] No. 52982/68. Heading H1D. In a C.R.T. comprising a luminescent screen, an electron gun system and two coaxial circular cylindrical electrodes 70, 71 whose common axis does not coincide with the axis of an electron beam from the gun, the common boundary line between the two electrodes 70, 71 has, as shown, a profile so shaped as to be curved towards the screen on both sides of its point of intersection with a plane containing the cylinder and beam path axes, the point being adjacent the beam path axis. The common boundary line is the locus of the midpoint of the gap between the two cylinders if their ends are axially spaced or of the normal projection of the end of the smaller cylinder on to the larger one if they overlap. This shaping of the electrodes alters the focusing electric field to compensate for the different strengths of focusing experienced in the meridional and sagittal planes by an off-axis beam, and which causes astigmatism. As shown, the electron gun system may produce three off-axis beams, for colour television, which cross the plane containing the boundary line at 74, 75 and 76 respectively, in which case the shape of the development of the common boundary line is preferably sinusoidal. As shown, both adjacent ends of the electrodes 70, 71 may be so shaped; alternatively only the end of one of the electrodes may be shaped. In an example specific electrode dimensions and operating voltages are given. One, at least, of the cylindrical electrodes may be formed as a coating on the tube envelope.
