Abstract

1,202,563. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 Nov., 1967 [16 Nov., 1966], No. No. 51509/67. Heading H1D. In a cathode-ray tube in which the length of the tube is reduced by having the neck out of alignment with the rest of the envelope and in which the electron beam from gun 3 is deflected in two mutually perpendicular directions at right-angles to the beam path, the beam is bent towards the screen 8 by a pair of plates 5 each of which is curved to form part of a cylindrical surface and situated so that the corresponding cylinders are coaxial, and each surface subtending an angle # at the cylinder axes, which angles are coincident, and where # lies between 127À3 and 133 degrees. Preferably the deflection of the electron beam in the axial direction of the cylinders 5 is effected by plates 4 situated between the cylinders and gun 3, and deflection of the beam in the radial direction of the cylinders is effected by plates 6 after the beam has passed through the cylniders. The upper limit on the angle 0 is imposed by restricting the magnification in the radial direction of the cylinders of an image after passing through the cylinders to being not less than 0À5, and furthermore the distance L from the end plane 10 of the cylinders to the first focus of the beam becomes so large for angles greater than 133 degrees that no significant reduction in the length of the tube is achieved. Dimensions and specific voltages of an example are given.
