[Also in Division A5] The mattress frame of an invalid bed is carried in an inner yoke 12 for lateral tilting or oscillation and an outer yoke 18 has trunnions 31, which, on operating jack 25, are lowered into bearing blocks 33, 34 to enable the bed to be pivoted into an upright position (Fig. 5, not shown). The frame may be retained at any selected angle of tilt by the engagement of pin 53 with one of holes 52. Alternatively, the frame may be continuously rocked about its pivots 19, 20 by an electric motor (41, Figs. 1, 3 and 7, not shown). Jack 25 and motor (41) may be replaced by hydraulic rams. The bed surface is subdivided into hinged panels 94a, b and e, which are individually lowerable to provide access to different parts of the patient. A back support has spring steel sections 119 of variable configuration (Figs. 11 and 12, not shown). The patient is confined between padded flexible walls 61, 67, the former having spigots 62 engaging adjustable sockets 60. Padded knee caps 71 are of adjustable height. A padded shoulder and head restraining frame may be combined with means for applying spring tension to the skull (Fig. 9, not shown). On inverting the bed, the patient may be supported by rigid padded covers (92, Fig. 1, not shown) or by straps. Heated or cooled air may be circulated beneath the covers. The construction may be modified by replacing the pivot bearings 19, 20 by arcuate bearings. The mattress frame may be detachable for use as a separate stretcher. (For Figure, see next page)
