Abstract

1,176,680. Magnetic holding devices. J. ZIMMER. 20 Dec., 1967 [29 Dec., 1966], No. 57980/67. Heading H1P. In a machine having a member urged against material passing between it and a base-plate, the member is of magnetizable material and is attracted by a magnetic holding device arranged in the base-plate, the magnetic holding device comprising spaced permanent magnet poles and pole zones of magnetizable material overlying the poles, the zones and poles being relatively displaceable to vary the magnetic force. The member may comprise a roller or squeegee. As shown, Fig. 1, the holding device comprises a casing 1, the cover 5 of which contains a row of circular discs 6 of magnetizable material. Permanent magnets 2 separated by polepieces 3 are mounted within the casing and are clamped together by means of a rod 4. In the position shown, the circular discs 6 in the cover-plate 5 are aligned with the polepieces 3 to produce poles of alternate polarity so that maximum attractive force is exerted. When the permanent magnets 2 and polepieces 3 are moved to the left, by means of rod 4 and captive nut 9, the discs 6 shunt adjacent polepieces to " switch off " the attractive force. In modifications, two rows of circular magnetizable discs are provided in the cover-plate, Fig. 5 (not shown), two cover-plates are provided on opposite sides of the magnets and polepieces, Fig. 6 (not shown), and the magnets and polepieces are fixed in the casing, the cover-plate which carries the discs, being adjustably positioned on the casing.
