[Also in Division F4] A boiler water deficiency expansion type safety device comprises an inner rod 1 arranged to operate a switch 6 and an outer tube 2, tube 2 having the higher coefficient of expansion and the rod 1 and tube 2 being heated by a coil 8 in insulation 9. Tube 2 is fixed at one end 3 to the switch case 5, and its other closed end is connected to rod 1. Under normal conditions, i.e. when tube 2 is immersed in the boiler water, and coil 8 is energized, rod 1 expands by a greater amount 10 since tube 2 is cooled by the boiler water, and the switch 6 is unoperated, as shown. When coil 8 is energized and there is a water deficiency, the temperatures of rod 1 and tube 2 rise since tube 2 is no longer immersed. Tube 2 expands by a greater amount, which cancels the amount 10, and an adjustable screw 11 thereby operates switch 6 to turn off the firing system and give an alarm. To check under normal conditions, coil 8 is de-energized and the temperatures of rod 1 and tube 2 fall. Rod 1 contracts more and amount 10 is cancelled and the switch 6 is operated.
