1296279 Electric kettles W H B THORNTON 3 Aug 1971 [21 May 1970 6 July 1970] 24671/70 and 32553/70 Index A4E 138 160 162 206 and 218 An electric kettle comprises a heating element 7, a discharge duct 3 arranged so that when steam is generated it forces the boiling water through the discharge duct 3, a heat responsive element 10 arranged to be contacted by the steam and arranged to operate a switch and break the electricity supply, and a shield 12 having at least two settings, one of which permits steam to flow to the heat responsive element sufficiently freely to cause it to respond when or soon after the water begins to boil and the other of which restricts the flow of steam to the heat responsive element 10 so that heating thereof and consequential breaking of the supply is delayed for sufficient time to allow automatic discharge of water. The bi-metal heat responsive element 10 is coupled to bi-stable switch actuator 15 by a plunger 13. A rod 18 on the actuator 15 opens contacts to a buzzer or bell 19 in one position and opens contacts to the heating element in the other position. On boiling therefore buzzer or bell raise the alarm.
