Abstract

1,083,747. Temperature responsive actuating elements. SATCHWELL CONTROLS Ltd. Dec. 9, 1965 [Dec. 9, 1964; July 28, 1965], Nos. 50153/64 and 32249/65. Heading G1D. An electrically operated thermal expansion actuator comprises a casing 10 containing an expansible medium, a piston 11 extending from the interior thereof and an electrically powered heater arranged to heat the expansible medium causing movement of the piston 11, the heater being in the form of bare resistance wires 27 wound on a cage (not shown) disposed inside the casing 10. The expansible medium may be, polyethylene or a mixture of polyethylene and wax and the piston may be used to control a valve 18. Springs 28, 30 are provided to bias the piston 11 to its retracted position and to prevent overloading of the valve 18. In alternative embodiments the casing 10 may be disposed close to the valve to provide direct thermal feedback from the medium controlled by the valve (e. g. hot water) by heat conduction through the casing 10.
