Abstract

1,175,547. Welding by pressure. ELECTRICITY COUNCIL. 30 Jan., 1968 [30 Jan., 1967], No. 4488/67. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H2] A distribution cable 10 is stripped of a portion of its outer sheeting 11 and paper insulation 13 to expose a conductor at 14 to which is friction welded a portion 10 of a pin 15, by rotating the pin under pressure for a few seconds and then applying a forging pressure. For aluminium to aluminium welding a rotation of between 2,500 and 3,500 r.p.m. is preferable for 2 to 3 seconds under a pressure of at least 7,000 p.s.i. For copper to aluminium, a rotation of at least 4,500 r.p.m. for 3 to 4 seconds is preferable and for copper to copper a rotation of greater than 4,500 r.p.m. A forging pressure of 12,000 p.s.i. may be employed. A lead-off conductor (not shown) is crimped or bolted to a portion 17, preferably of copper, of the pin 15 and the joint may be insulated by a potting compound.
