Abstract

1,174,480. Sorting apparatus. M.E.L. EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. 16 May, 1968 [8 Nov., 1967], No. 50748/67. Heading B2H. [Also in Divisions A1 and G1] A harvesting machine for roof crops comprises digging means and elevators which convey the crop and unwanted rubbish to a distributing device which grades the crop and rubbish into a plurality of channels 14-17, 22-25 on another conveyor 18, and electronic sorting apparatus 26, at the end of the conveyor 18, which uses X-rays to sort the crop from the rubbish. The distributing device comprises four channelled rollers 9-12 and three plain rollers 19-21, the smaller objects passing through the gaps in the rollers 9-12 via hoppers 13 to channels 14-17, the larger objects being distributed by rollers 19-21 to channels 22-25. The channels on rollers 9- 12 are formed by rubber protusions and the rollers rotate in the direction of movement of the crop and their axes are arranged on a 45‹ slope. The sorting apparatus operates fingers 27 to pass the crop to conveyor 29 and to reject stones and other rubbish. The deflector mechanism on the fingers may be a double acting, or a pair of single acting, pneumatic or hydraulic rams.
