Abstract

1,174,010. Controlling reactors. NUCLEAR DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION (1966) Ltd. 30 May, 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 25388/67. Heading G6C. A control rod drive mechanism comprises a support roller chain 3, which is of sufficient length to permit the control rod 1 to drop to a fully inserted position within a control rod channel, connected at one end to the control rod 1 and at the other end to a point on an endless roller chain 4 via a connecting pin 5, to one side of the chain 4. The chain 4 is wound around a series of pulleys 6, at least one of which (6A) is connected to a motor (not shown) and provided with a fixed driving sprocket (not shown) for transmitting the drive from the motor to the chain 4. A further sprocket is also fixed on the pulley 6A for the support roller chain 3. Corresponding sprockets (not shown) are also fixed on the lowermost pulley 6B in order to ensure that the connecting pin 5 will at no time carry the full weight of the control rod. The drive mechanism is housed within a standpipe 2 for the control rod channel. A guide pulley 7 located in the standpipe 2 beneath the drive mechanism serves to centre the support chain 3 and the control rod 1 in the standpipe. When the control rod 1 is fully inserted, the support chain 3 is fully extended and its point of connection to the endless chain 4 lies at A. If the pulley 6A is driven in a clockwise direction, the endless chain 4 moves to wind the support chain 3 on to the pulleys 6 until its point of connection to the chain 4 reaches B when the control rod 1 is fully retracted.
