PURPOSE:To retrieve a tape position precisely in a short time without damaging a tape, by computing retrieval conditions, torque which corresponds to the diameter of wound tape, etc., by a microprocessor. CONSTITUTION:A tape 11 wound around a supply S reel 10 driven by a motor S9 for the supply reel is taken up around a take-up T reel 16 driven by a motor T15 for the take-up reel by way of the 1st and 2nd posts 13 and 14 arranged so that the winding angle of the tape 11 to a rotary roller 12. To the rotary roller 12, the 1st rotary encoder 17 is connected; the 1st and 2nd light emitting elements 18 and 19 are positioned over the encoder and the 1st and 2nd photodetecting elements 20 and 21 receiving light from them are installed under the encoder. The outputs of two photodetecting elements 20 and 21 are shaped by the 1st and 2nd shaping circuits 22 and 23, whose output pulses 24 and 25 are supplied to the tape 11 to be rolled up to the T reel 16.
