Abstract
1,173,952. Moulding carbides. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. 7 Feb., 1967 [16 Feb., 1966], No. 5735/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions C7 and G6] Reactor fuel compacts of at least one of UC, ThC or PuC are formed from low-density preformed pellets of the carbides which are hot pressed in an electrically insulated die while an electric current is passed through the pellets. The preformed low-density pellets are formed from a powder mixture of UO 2 C, a binder, polyvinyl alcohol and water which is dried, granulated to minus 20 mesh, pressed into pellets which are then heated to 1850-2000‹ C. in a vacuum induction furnace in a graphite crucible lined with tungsten. The preformed UC pellets with a density of 40-70% of theoretical are hot pressed in the insulating die which is lined with ZrO 2 , BeO, ThO, MgO, MgZrO 3 , CaZrO 3 , BN, Si 3 N 4 or AIN. The coatings may be applied by flame spraying or as preformed liners. The hot pressing is carried out under vacuum, an inert gas or in air at a pressure of 500-50,000 p.s.i. Current is passed through the pellets at a voltage of 0-2 to 20 and a current density of 10,000 to 50,000 amps/inch<SP>2</SP>. The pressure is applied for one or more periods each of 0-1 to 30 seconds duration.
