Abstract
846,292. Nuclear control elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 2, 1958 [April 2, 1957], No. 10696/57. Class 39(4). A boron body for use as a reactor control element is formed by pressing a mixture of boron powder with a metallic powder or silicon powder. The mixture contains 5-20% by weight of the metallic powder, the powders being of similar particle size such as five microns. A graphite die is used and this is lined with boron nitride to prevent the formation of boron carbide. A pressure of about 1 ton per square inch is applied at 1900‹C. for ten minutes, after which the body is cooled slowly, without the pressure, to avoid cracking.
