Abstract

846,292. Nuclear control elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 2, 1958 [April 2, 1957], No. 10696/57. Class 39(4). A boron body for use as a reactor control element is formed by pressing a mixture of boron powder with a metallic powder or silicon powder. The mixture contains 5-20% by weight of the metallic powder, the powders being of similar particle size such as five microns. A graphite die is used and this is lined with boron nitride to prevent the formation of boron carbide. A pressure of about 1 ton per square inch is applied at 1900‹C. for ten minutes, after which the body is cooled slowly, without the pressure, to avoid cracking. Suitable metallic powders are aluminium, manganese, copper and pickel
