Abstract

1,173,339. Casting processes; ingot moulds. ENGLISH STEEL CORP. Ltd. 7 Feb., 1968 [15 Feb., 1967], No. 7209/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Division H5] To provide a low electrical resistance path between an ingot 21 and the bottom of the mould 2 in which it is formed (by the melting and refining of an electrode 3 in molten slag 20), there is a projection 7 on the plate 6 which forms the separable mould bottom spaced by insulation 5 from the wall and which is clamped to a copper contact plate 9 having a lead 10 for A.C. or D.C. The contact plate 9 is cooled by water from a pipe 13, while cooling water from pipes 17 flows down over the mould 2. The projection 7, which penetrates the layer 22 of solidified slag forming on the bottom plate 6, instead of being secured by screws 8, may be formed integrally with the plate. After stripping, the projection 7 which has become welded to the ingot 21 is released from it by means of the screws 8 or by machining or flame-cutting it away.
