Abstract

1,172,914. Web coating apparatus. HARRIS INTERTYPE CORP. 17 Jan., 1967, No. 2510/67. Heading D1L. In making corrugated paperboard, rows of spaced droplets of an adhesive are applied to a liner web B from rows of discrete cells in the surface of an applicator roll 18. The roll 18 has a land surface containing a multiplicity of parallel rows of discrete cells preferably shaped as shallow fasteners of square pyramids. Adhesive is picked up in the cells of the roll from a trough 20, is metered therein by an adjustable spring loaded blade 23 and is brought into contact with the web B at the nip of the applicator roll 18 with a back nip roll 18, the pressure at the nip being adjustable by fluid cylinders 47. The web B with transverse lines of adhesive thereon is then brought into contact with a corrugated medium (Figs. 1, 2, not shown), the applicator roll and the corrugating means being so synchronised that the rows of adhesive coincide with the peaks of the corrugations. The adhesive is subsequently cured to form a bond between the peaks and the liner.
