Waterproof corrugated paper is produced by applying adhesive to a band of corrugated paper and hot gluing on at least one of the faces of the adhesive bearing band of corrugated paper, a band of cover paper coated on its outer face with a waterproof protective material, e.g. paraffin, microcrystalline wax, polyethylene or polyvinylidene chloride, having a sticky softening point lower than the temperature to which the cover paper is subjected in the course of manufacture, the hot gluing comprising passing the band of cover paper over a heating surface, e.g. a heated cylinder or plate while the adhesivebearing band of corrugated paper is in contact with the band of cover paper, the latter being heated adequately by the heating surface to effect adhesion, there being interposed between the outer face of the cover paper and the heating surface, a thin band of thermal insulation material which is indifferent to the temperature to which the heating surface is brought and has a sufficiently low thermal conductivity and a surface state such that the adhesion by at least partial fusion of the waterproof protective material to the material is made impossible, while permitting adequate heating of the cover paper, the band of thermal insulation material circulating at the same time and the same speed as the cover paper. The band of thermal insulation material may be of paper glazed on its face coming into contact with the coating on the cover paper, paper coated or impregnated with a silicone, glass fibre fabric or other textile material coated or impregnated with a silicone or polytetrafluoro ethylene, and may be cooled before it comes into contact with the heating surface by depositing thereon a thin film of water by means of a wetting cylinder, by spraying thereon cold water, by blowing thereon cold air or by passage over a cooled cylinder. A starch-based adhesive may be used. In Fig. 1, paper band 2 is fed from reel 1 over pre-heating cylinder 3 heated by the circulation of steam to about 100‹ C., between fluting cylinders 4 and 5, the fluting cylinder 5 co-operating with gluing roller 6 fed with glue from tank 7 so that glue is applied to the top of the flutes of the corrugated sheet, and the cover paper band 8 coated with waterproof protective material is fed from reel 9 and applied against the corrugated sheet after glue has been applied thereto, with the aid of smoothing press cylinder 10 heated by internal circulation of steam to 150-160‹ C., the single faced corrugated paper produced being carried by conveyer 11 and passed over bridge 12. Between sheet 8 and cylinder 10 is interposed a continuous band 13 of silicone treated paper which passes around the cylinder 10 and free roller 14 to prevent softening of the coating on cover paper 8. After passage over bridge 12 a second cover paper may be glued to the other side of the single-faced corrugated paper.
