Abstract
1,172,812. Automatic moisture control. T.H. BAGGALEY. June 26, 1967 [July 12, 1966], No. 31290/66. Heading G3R. A potted plant is automatically supplied with a predetermined quantity of water when that supplied by a previous operation has evaporated. This is effected by the apparatus shown, which comprises a conventional horizontal beam weighing machine 1 modified by the addition of a micro-switch 16, a main switch 23 and a ball bearing 10 movable along the beam 3 to a position determined by the insertion of a pin (13) in a selected one of a number of holes 14 in the beam, the switches 16, 23 being series-connected with the operating coil of a solenoid valve 21 controlling the main water supply pipe 20 feeding the potted plant 18 through an auxiliary pipe 19. To set up, the ball bearing 10 is retained by the pin (13) in a neutral (weight) position and a counter-weight 6 is moved along the beam 3 to balance the weight of the potted plant 18 and maintain the beam 3 in a horizontal position set by pointers 4, 5. The pin (13) is then inserted in a hole 14 corresponding to a desired weight of water to be supplied, the holes 14 being calibrated for this purpose. Next the beam 3 is manually depressed so that the bearing 10 rolls to its selected position, causing the beam 3 to close the micro-switch 16 through its operating finger 17. Switch 23 is now closed to energize the valve 21 and cause water to flow into the pot 18 whose increasing weight causes the beam 3 to rise until the bearing 10 rolls back to its neutral position, thus allowing switch 16 to open and causing the valve 21 to shut off the water supply. As the water evaporates the beam 3 sinks until, when it is below the horizontal, the bearing 10 rolls back to its selected position to repeat the above cycle. The pipe 20 may supply a large number of potted plants whose watering is controlled by the valve 21 in accordance with its operation for the representative pot 18.
