Abstract

1,035,136. Watering plants. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 3, 1965 [June 4, 1964], No. 23232/64. Heading A1E. A system for growing plants comprises a layer of porous material 2 in or on which plants can be grown and apressure sensitive device communicating through passage 11 with the layer and controlling the supply of water to the layer through perforated pipes 5. The device comprises a diaphragm 14 and switch 15 arranged to open solenoid valve 8 when the pressure at the switch falls below a predetermined value. The switch may act to close the valve when the pressure rises to a second predetermined value or alternatively the valve may be closed by a time-switch. As shown the plants are grown in pots 3 placed on a layer of sand 2 but the plants may be grown in a soil medium located above or replacing the sand.
