A device for controlling water sprinklers for lawns a n d agricultural irrigation according to the moisture in the soil comprises sensors buried in the soil which change their resistance according to the moisture content of the soil and are connected to a time-controlled circuit to operate a solenoidcontrolled valve to control flow in the sprinklers. As shown water flows through an inlet 25 and is controlled by valve 41 operated by a solenoid 61. The valve 41 is provided with a bleed hole 42 so that water flows into the chamber 33 past a valve 51 which is operated by the solenoid 61. When the valve is opened water flows into the chamber 33 through the hole 42, the increase in pressure closing the valve 41 and shutting off the supply. To prevent back-flow from the outlet 26 a valve 65 is provided which closes opening 36 when the valve 41 closes, the valve 65 dropping by gravity. An electro-magnetic switch 18 has a closed position when the resistance in the device 17 is high and moves to an open position when the resistance decreases to a predetermined degree.
