Abstract

766,538. Float-actuated valves. CLAYTON, N. A. March 30, 1954 [March 30, 1953], No. 8758/53. Class 135. In order that a float-operated cistern supply valve may open and close more quickly, a biasing chamber 8, open at its top and formed integral with a cylindrical float 4, is connected by a flexible hose 21 to the outlet 22 of the supply valve 14 and provided at its bottom with an adjustable outlet 9. The usual ball float is removed by shortening its float arm 17 which engages a stirrup 18 formed on an arm 1 carrying at one end the float 4 and the biasing chamber 8 and pivoted at its other end on a pivot pin 15 on which the arm 17 is pivoted. An adjustable screw 19 determines the water level which is to be maintained in the cistern. When the level of water in the cistern commences to fall and the valve begins to open, water flows into the chamber 8 to load the float and accelerate the opening of the valve. On the valve approaching its fully closed position when the cistern is being refilled, water leaves the chamber 8 at a faster rate than it enters it to effect a more rapid closure of the valve. In a modification, the float and chamber are made somewhat longer and the outlet 9 is replaced by a series of holes gradually increasing in size from the bottom of the chamber to the top.
