Abstract

Ball and float valves; floats.-In a ball cock having a screwed plug, such as 14, closing the upper opening in the casing, the plug is conically recessed at the bottom to receive the conical upper side of the valve 16, and a diverting lip 17 is formed in the inlet passage; these arrangements avoid an undue closing action of the fluid pressure and prevent water hammer. The float 11, which is adjustable along the float lever by means uf a screw 13, is hollow and its weight can be varied by the addition or subtraction of shot. The float lever may be jointed at 9 and capable of free movement through some such angle as is shown in Fig. 1. As the cistern 3 is filling, the float rises with the lever in the bent condition shown, but when the valve is nearly closed the water pressure on the top thereof quickly forces it down upon its seating and at the same time straightens out the lever. This arrangement gives a quick closing action to the valve without shocks.
