1,172,794. Ceramic-metal seals PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED CO. 16 April, 1968 [18 April, 1967], No. 17827/68. Heading B3V. [Also in Division C1] In a sodium vapour discharge lamp comprising an envelope of densely sintered aluminium oxide, niobium electrodes are sealed into the envelope by a glass resistant to sodium vapour and consisting of, in percentages by weight: Al 2 O 3 35-55 ; CaO 30-40; MgO 3-8; BaO 5-10; B 2 O 3 1-7; SiO 2 0-2 and K 2 O + Na 2 O 0-2. Rings of the glass powder are formed by heating to 1190‹ C. with a binder, e.g. of polymethyl methacrylate or of nitrocellulose. Two rings are then positioned over each niobium electrode at the ends of the envelope with a ring of Al 2 O 3 between and the assembly heated to 1200‹ C. to melt the glass, which flows between the electrode and the envelope and between the electrode and the Al 2 O 3 ring to seal them.
