Abstract
1,172,690. Extruding. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 8 Dec., 1966 [9 Dec., 1965], No. 54985/66. Heading B3P. A high pressure chamber 11, particularly for use in hydrostatic extrusion, is formed by separate coaxial split bands of convolutions 16, 17 having interlocking ends which cause the radial pressure to be absorbed progressively from the outer to the inner convolutions. The convolutions are wound from bands with tapered ends, Fig. 3 (not shown), which are wound to form concentric rings 16, 17, 18, Fig. 2 (not shown). Alternatively, outer band 18 may be continuous. The convolutions have interengaging teeth (47), (48), Fig. 3, 4 (not shown), which are so arranged that the radial pressure is transmitted initially to the outer convolution 18. The bands together with an inner sleeve 13 are clamped by bolts 21 between end plates 19, 20; fluid seals 23, 36 are provided. The billet 10 is extruded through a die 12 mounted on a standard 32, by pressurization of fluid in chamber 11 using a ram 28. The extruded rod passes into chamber 37 also containing fluid pressurized by piston 38 in cylinder 39.
