Abstract
1,172,165. Purification of sublimable materials. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 6 Feb., 1967 [9 Feb., 1966], No. 5583/67. Heading BIB. [Also in Division C1] A sublimable material, e.g. uranium hexafluoride, in the form of vapour which contains gaseous impurities is purified by introducing the vapour through pipe 14 into a cooled chamber 1 which is mounted above an airlock chamber 2 leading down to a sublimation enclosure 3 heated by electrical resistance 13. The walls of chamber 1 are cooled by jacket 4, and the vapours of the sublimable material solidify in the form of crystals on the cooled walls, while the impurities remain in the gaseous state and are discharged through pipe 15. Periodically, the crystals are detached from the walls of chamber 1 by scrapers 7 which are connected to cylinder 5 and moved up or down by a pneumatic motor and a control rod 6. Bellows 9 provide sealing-tightness and allow movement to be transmitted to rod 6. The detached crystals drop into the inlet of airlock chamber 2, which has an upper baffle 10 and a lower baffle 11, the baffle system being rigidly connected to cylinder 5. Baffles 10 and 11 are mutually displaceable by two springs inside the baffle structure (Figures 2 to 5, not shown). The arrangement is such that the crystals enter chamber 2 only when baffle 11 has closed the sublimation enclosure 3; and the crystals drop into enclosure 3 when baffle 10 has closed the chamber 1. The crystals are sublimed in enclosure 3, and the purified vapour leaves the apparatus through pipe 16. Valves (not shown) disposed in pipes 14, 15, 16 enable the pressures inside chamber 1 and enclosure 3 to be controlled. Cylinder 5 has an internal heating device 8 to prevent crystallization on its surface.
