Abstract
1387894 Refining metals by distillation INSTITUT METALLURGII I OBOGASCHENIA AN KAZAKHSKOI SSR and NOVOSIBIRSKY OLOVYANNY KOMBINAT 22 Nov 1972 53862/72 Heading C7D Apparatus for removing low-boiling impurities from metals by vacuum distillation, e.g. for removing lead and bismuth from tin, comprises a cylindrical vacuum chamber 1 on the longitudinal axis of which are mounted a series of open evaporating plates 5 heated by a graphite rod 7 passing through the centres of the plates and connected to water-cooled current feeder 8. Impure metal enters through conduit 23 and passes down a series of enclosed plates 4, each provided with annular channels for flow of metal and an opening for discharging metal to the next plate; these plates are also heated by rod 7. The metal continues to flow down through plates 5, and is removed by conduit 21 to cooling means 22 and ladle 28. The low-boiling impurities evaporate in plates 5 and the vapours condense on the multilayer perforate cylindrical screens 11, 12 or on the walls of condenser 15, and then run down to the shallow conical upper portion 17 of a cylindrical condensate collector 16 mounted coaxially with the column of plates, 4, 5; a conduit 19 connects the condensate collector 16 with a separate ladle 29. In the preferred embodiment the plates 4, 5 are kept at a temperature of 1200- 1350‹C, while cooling means 22 reduce the purified metal to a temperature of 300-350‹C.
