1,159,918. Refining metals. TSENTRALNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT OLOVYANNOI PROMYSHLENNOSTI and INSTITUT METALLURGII. April 18, 1967, No.17757/67. Heading C7D. Continuous action apparatus for refining metals by evaporation and condensation of volatile impurities under reduced pressure comprises a distillation column 1 which is made up of plates 2, 3 having lugs with holes 12 therethrough which are mutually horizontally displaced in adjacent plates, the lower group of plates 3 also having aligned holes 13 forming a common passage in communication with condenser 14. Metal to be refined is supplied to the top of the column via funnel 11, refined metal leaving the column by way of trough 15 while impurities are received in condenser 14. Reference is made to the removal of Pb and/or Bi and Sb and/or As from Sn; the removal of Zn from Pb; and the separation of the constituents of Sn-Pb alloys.
