Abstract
908,069. Reactors. LINDE'S EISMASCH. INEN A.G. GES. FUR. Dec. 1, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958 (2)], No. 40761/59. Class 39 (4). A gas containing radioactive and other impurities is purified in several stages in such a way that active impurities are removed in one stage while other impurities are removed in other stages. The Figure shows a cooling system through which is diverted part of the coolant of a nuclear reactor, a mixture of He and Ne; the coolant enters at A (solid line) and leaves at B (dotted line). A heated catalyst unit 1 oxidizes H 2 and CO to H 2 O and CO 2 . The coolant is cooled in heat exchangers 3 to 6 by returning coolant and by cold air (dash and dot line) ; easily condensable substances are removed at 7. H 2 O and CO 2 are removed in gel dryer 8 at -60 ‹ C. Refrigeration then takes place in heat exchangers 10, 11 by means of cold air from a liquid air evaporator 12. Radioactive materials are removed by activated charcoal at 13 at below -70‹ C. Several dryers 8 and adsorbers 13 are provided; they are used in succession and their total working life is comparable with that of the reactor. The adsorbers remove all active impurities and very little else and can be made small. The returning flow of purified coolant is used as a protective gas for the impure coolant.
