Apparatus for the combustion of gases of low thermal value containing soot and water vapour comprises a pre-mixing chamber 2 in which all the gas for combustion introduced tangentially through pipe 8 and 30-50% of the combustion air introduced from manifold 6 through slots 7 are mixed, a further 45-65% of the air being introduced through radial nozzles 3 into a mixing zone in the combustion chamber where combustion is initiated and a final 5% of the air being introduced into the combustion chamber through a lateral inlet just before a cross-sectional restriction 4.
