Abstract

1,171,196. Extracting castings. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 28 May, 1968 [28 June, 1967], No. 29784/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A ceramic shell mould for use in metal casting and which may be removed easily from the cast metal is made by applying alternate slurry and stucco coatings to a disposable pattern until a shell of required thickness is obtained, removing the pattern, and firing the mould, the slurry being particulate refractory in a liquid binder, at least one of the stucco coatings containing a particulate solid which is inert to the binder and converted on firing to a material which is soluble in water or aqueous acid or alkali or convertible by reaction therewith into a soluble material, so that the mould may be more easily removed from a metal casting. The particulate solid may be a water-insoluble metal carbonate which decomposes on firing to an oxide, e.g. calcium or magnesium carbonate. It is preferably included in the stucco of one or more of the secondary investment layers but not the primary investment layer.
