Abstract

Refractory shapes are produced by kilning shapes derived from slurries containing aluminium hydroxychloride (AHY) and a grog and which is rendered alkaline by an alkali or alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide, an alkaline reacting salt of an alkali or alkaline earth metal, or an alkaline gas such as ammonia. Suitable grogs are molochite, sillimanite, high alumina and fused recrystallized reground alumina materials. The slurries are best prepared by mixing the dry grog and alkaline material, such as magnesium oxide or chloride, with an aqueous solution of AHY. The slurry is cast into a mould (the addition of magnesium silicate or of aluminium silicate to the slurry improves the mould stripping process) where it gels and hardens. The hardened shape is removed from the mould, air dried, and kilned at 1250-1400‹ C.
