Abstract

1,170,908. Sealing lead-ins of electric cells. ELECTRIC POWER STORAGE Ltd. 2 Feb., 1967 [3 Feb., 1966], No. 4808/66. Heading H1B. The seal between a partition or wall of a cell and a conductor passing therethrough is improved by making a portion of the conductor of porous, sintered, electrolyte-resistant metal and forming the wall or partition round it so that the material thereof forms a continuous solid mass with the metal. As shown the post 18 of a nickel-iron accumulator is connected to the terminal 19 by a sintered nickel strip 16 to which the post 18 and terminal 19 are welded. The lid 17 is formed of epoxy resin which impregnates and embeds the strip 16. The lid may also be made of nylon, polystyrene or bitumen and may be formed by casting or injection moulding. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the post 18 and terminal 19 are in line, welded to and separated by a disc 20 of sintered nickel in a plane perpendicular to the line of the post and terminal. The conductor may be of lead for use in lead cells.
