Abstract
1,170,623. Coating by vapour deposition. NORTON RESEARCH CORP. Jan.13, 1967 [Feb. 1, 1966], No. 1874/67. Heading C7F. [Also in Division C1] Boron carbide is coated on a substrate by evaporating boron carbide from a carbon crucible which is heated by induction at a temperature of about 2300‹C. in a vacuum chamber evacuated to a pressure less than 1 x 10<SP>-3</SP> torr to create boron carbide vapours and depositing the vapours on a substrate heated above ambient temperatures. The substrate has a density less than 5À0 gm/cc and the deposition is continued until the deposit is at least one-third of the substrate thickness. The substrate may be aluminium, tungsten, or a polymeric film such as a polyimide or epoxy resin.
