Abstract

1,183,971. Vapour deposition of metals. JONES & LAUGHLIN STEEL CORP. May 4, 1967 [May 4, 1966], No.20867/67. Heading C7F. To minimize the re-evaporation which limits the thickness of a metal layer which can be deposited on a metal substrate by condensation from a vapour in an evacuated chamber the layer formed is treated, in the chamber and while re-evaporation is in progress, to coat it with a metal or metal oxide, having a vapour pressure lower than that of the deposited metal, or to convert the surface of the layer to such an oxide. Zn coatings on steel may be treated with oxidizing gas as they move through the chamber, or the Zn coatings may be covered with Al or Sn. The metal substrated may be cooled before exposure to vaporized coating metal, and the coated substrate may be heated to bring about alloying of the coating metal and substrate.
