Abstract

1,170,597. Electrostatography. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct.21, 1966 [Oct.23, 1965], No.47174/66. Heading G2H. A latent electrostatic image on a web 3 is developed by passing the layer over a drum 7 in a bath 8 containing a layer of metallic liquid 1 (e.g. Hg) and a layer of electrically insulating liquid 2, a conductive toner 4 being dispersed along the interface of the layers and the drum being so positioned that a thin layer of the insulating liquid separates web 3 from the metallic liquid during development and the toner particles pass through this thin layer to develop the image. The insulating liquid may be petrol, benzene, cyclohexane, turpentine, silicon resin and/or a halogenated hydrocarbon. The toner may be a metal, or a metal sulphide or oxide. Bath 8 is provided with an agitator 10, liquid and toner replenishing openings 11 and 12, a photo-cell or float to automatically control the liquid level, and electrodes 9 to remove the charge formed in conductive liquid by contact with the toner. In a modification drum 7 may be light-sensitive, and electrostatic images formed thereon developed in the bath and transferred to a received sheet.
