Abstract

1,170,499. Printing-apparatus. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG - NURNBERG A.G. 18 Oct., 1967 [10 Nov., 1966], No. 47514/67. Heading B6C. Apparatus for washing the surface of an offset cylinder 1 to prevent set-off comprises a cleaning roller 9 having a hard, grooved, surface and adapted to co-operate with a fountain roller 8 partially immersed in cleaning liquid in a fountain 7 and with the cylinder 1 which is rotated in the opposite direction to the roller 9 and at a higher or lower peripheral speed . The roller 9 may be grooved longitudinally, Fig. 2 (not shown), or helically, Fig. 3 (not shown), the grooves being inclined to provide stripping edges. The roller 9 may be of glass, or a ceramic or plastics material, and the roller 8 consists of a porous slightly compressible material. The fountain is provided with an inspection window 11 and with projections 13 on its internal bottom surface. The contact pressure between the rollers 8 and 9 may be adjusted to vary the ink transfer. The roller 9 may be moved into contact with the cylinder 1 by a pneumatic piston operated by an electromagnetic valve which is itself operated, in the case of web printing, when the reel changing operation is initiated. Cams on the cylinder 1 trip the roller 9 in the region of recesses in the surface of the cylinder. In the case of successive printing units the cleaning devices are operated in sequence by timing relays.
