Abstract

A method of removing particles of foreign matter from a rotating plate cylinder of a lithographic press while said cylinder is transferring an image to the material being printed comprises rotating the cylinder at a preselected surface speed, positioning a rotatable roller having a smooth non-metallic resilient surface in direct rolling contact with the surface of the plate cylinder positively rotating the roller in a direction opposite that of the plate cylinder at a surface speed which is different from that of the plate cylinder and maintaining the roller in direct continuous rolling contact with the rotating plate cylinder so that the plate cylinder is cleaned of all foreign matter. The roller is preferably rotated at a slower speed than the plate cylinder. Means are provided to clean the roller which may be one of a series of inking rollers or damping rollers.
