Abstract

1,168,396. Ethylene-haloalkyl acrylate copolymers. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 11 Sept., 1968, No. 43224/68. Heading C3P. A copolymer is prepared by polymerizing a major proportion by weight of ethylene with an ester of formula wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, X is halogen and m is 1 or 2. Specified esters are 2-chloroethyl acrylate and methacrylate, 2-bromoethyl acrylate and methacrylate, 1-(bromo ethyl)-2-bromoethyl acrylate and methacrylate and 1-(chloromethyl)-2-chloroethyl acrylate and methacrylate. In the example, ethylene and 2-chloroethyl acrylate are copolymerized using azobisisobutyronitrile as catalyst.
