Abstract

1448621 Foamed methyl methacrylate polymer sheets SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 4 Jan 1974 [10 Jan 1973] 00464/74 Headings C3C and C3P A glazing material comprises a foamed sheet of an acrylic polymer (i.e. a polymer containing at least 50 % by wt. of units derived from methyl methacrylate, the other comonomers being chosen so that the total light transmission of an unfoamed sheet is not impaired in comparison with an unfoamed sheet made wholly from methyl methacrylate) the sheet having a diffusion coefficient of 0À5-0À95 and a total light transmission of 40-90%. In Example (1) mixtures of methyl methacrylate and a methyl methacrylate resin were polymerized using as initiator 2,2<SP>1</SP>-azobis- (isobutyronitrile), 1,1<SP>1</SP> - azobis - (cyclohexane- 1-carbonitrile) and/or lauryl peroxide to form sheets within a cell formed by two glass plates; the cast plates were then foamed by heating. The foamed sheets were used to glaze horticultural structures, e.g. greenhouses.
