Abstract
1,262,526. Coated optical elements. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 21 March, 1969, No. 15066/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions C3 and G2] A transparent coated solid optical element comprises a preformed solid transparent base such as a polymethyl methacrylate lens having on at least one of its faces a layer of a fluorine-containing, transparent thermoset organic polymer having a refractive index within 0.02 refractive index units of the transparent base so that the surface imperfections therein are not optically degrading. The layer may be formed by polymerizing at least one fluorinefree acrylic monomer with at least one fluorine-containing acrylic monomer wherein one of the monomers is polyfunctional. The monomers may be represented in a preferred form by the formula: where R is an organic radical of n valence which may contain a divalent linking moiety such as -SO 2 -, -O-, -CO-, -SO 2 NR", and -CONR", R' is hydrogen or a lower alkyl radical preferably methyl, n is an integer usually less than five and R" is hydrogen or an alkyl group containing less than about six carbon atoms. Several examples are given including tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a fluorine-free monomer and 1, 1-dihydroperfluorobutyl methacrylate and N-ethyl perfluorooctane-sulforamido-ethyl methacrylate as fluorine-containing monomers.
