Abstract
1478455 Terpolymers NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 6 June 1974 [12 June 1973] 27902/73 Addition to 1395501 Heading C3P A terpolymer suitable for use in biomedical applications has the structure wherein R 1 , R 3 and R 5 are each independently hydrogen or C 1 to C 6 -alkyl groups, R 2 is a hydrocarbon group, R 4 is a polar hydrophilic group, R 6 is a polar hydrophobic group having an internal plasticizing effect upon the polymer and m, n and p are positive integers such that the terpolymer comprises from 40 to 90% by weight of the polar hydrophilic component and is capable of absorbing water. Preferably R 4 is a pyrrolidone group, a hydroxyl-substituted ethyl, propyl or butyl group, or hydroxyl-substituted aliphatic ester group and R 6 is an ester group, which may contain a C 5 to C 20 -alkyl, an alkoxy or a phenoxy substituent. Examples are given in which (a) 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 2- ethoxyethyl methacrylate and styrene are copolymerized in dioxan; (b) 2-hydroxyethyl or 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, lauryl methacrylate and styrene are polymerized in a glass tube and (c) 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate and styrene are copolymerized as in (a).
