Abstract

1,167,941. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 4 Jan., 1967 [17 Jan., 1966], No. 442/67. Heading B6F. [Also in Division G2] Type band machines; rotary drum electrostatic printing machines; machines with two sets of printing surfaces; machines coupled for simultaneous operation.-A selective printer is provided with an endless belt printer 10, Fig. 1, as described in Specification 919,653, to print a selected portion of a web 15 with alpha-numeric information disposed on the web in a predetermined format and the web which is provided with coded information in a field A, Fig. 2, and a gating control symbol CGS along the leading edge of a sheet, formed by cutting the web transversely at a later stage, is advanced to an electrostatic printer 25 in which the other portion of the information, e.g. in the form of a graph is printed electrostatically by a rotating drum 45. Electrostatic printing; record controlled input arrangements; sheet feeding arrangements.-The sheets severed from the web 15, Fig. 1, by a transverse cutter 36 and bearing the preprinted alpha-numeric information and five bit binary coded printing control information disposed in field A, Fig. 2, adjacent the leading edges, are fed by a suction drum 38 to the rotary electrostatic printing drum 45, carrying the latent image of the graphic information to be printed in assocation with the alpha-numeric information. The latent image is formed on the drum 45 in response to signals received by circuit control 43 from photo-electric cells PC2-PC7 which read the binary code in field A to cause the required information stored on a photographic film FL (Fig. 4) to be disposed in front of the lens of a projector P1 or P2, Fig. 1, whose shutters are enabled by a signal along control line 77, 77A when a photo-electric cell PC8 scans the GCS symbols adjacent the leading edge of the sheets. The latent image is dusted by xerographic powder in a container 59 and transferred to the sheets by rolling contact when the leading edge enters the bite between the drums 38, 45. The sheets are then stripped off the suction drum by a guide 46 and jet nozzles 40 and after fixing in a chamber 48 are stacked in a trough 52. Web feeding, guiding and cutting arrangements. The pre-printed web 15, Fig. 1, delivered continuously from the printer 10 is stored temporarily in the form of a loop in a vacuum column provided with vacuum switches, the lower one of which LLS stops the printer 10 if the electrostatic printer 25 cannot cope with printing of the graphic information. The web 15 on leaving the vacuum column is fed by driving rollers 26, 27 to a reversing roller 29 on the outlet side of which is disposed a further pair of driving rollers 33, 34 for intermittent advancing of the web 15 to a transverse cutter 36 which is operated by a one-revolution clutch 35 in response to a signal emitted by a photoelectric cell PC1 when it senses the GCS mark on the web 15.
