Abstract
1,131,019. Selective printing. BORGWARNER CORP. 2 May, 1966 [22 June, 1965], No. 19277/66. Heading B6F. An electrostatic printer having a continuously moving, apertured endless band 17, Fig. 1, for recording of selected characters on a record web 10 driven intermittently or to a particular line by selectively engageable drive rollers 43, 44 and brakes 14, 15 disposed adjacent each marginal edge of the web is provided with photoelectric sensing means 21, 22 which in conjunction with a control circuit, Fig. 4, controls registered or long feed movement of the web by applying one or the other or both of the respective drive rollers 43, 44 or brakes 14, 15, in response to signals generated by apertured discs 26, 34 and command signals fed along a GO line 171. In operation to feed the web 10 to a predetermined line or feed the web during printing in a registered manner with respect to marginal apertures 12, 13 whose alignment is sensed by the discs 26, 34 having a pair of rows of apertures 97, 98 a corresponding signal is applied to the GO line 171 whereby the starting circuit 203, which is conditioned by the output lines 126, 128, 135 and 150, 149, 160 of flip-flops 101, 102 controlling the left and right hand drive and brake means, respectively, sets the flipflops 101, 102 through output line 178 to energize the drive rollers 43, 44, each of which comprises a fixed roller 45 and a movable roller 47 which is brought into contact with the web by energization of a solenoid 51 acting on lever 48 which is attached to the shaft of roller 47. Movement of web 10 rotates apertured discs 26, 34 whose apertures 97, 98 generate time signals in conjunction with photo-electric sensors 28, 31 and 35, 36 respectively and rollers 43, 44 are driven as long as aligned feeding takes place, the starting circuit 203 being blocked by the set state of flip-flops 101, 102 through the output lines 126, 128, 135 and 150, 149, 160. When one of the photo-electric cells detects a misalignment a signal sent along the respective line 115, 116 resets the flip-flop 101 or 102 and the paired inputs 144, 149 or 128, 165, which correspond to respective GO and STOP outputs of the flip-flops 101, 102, enable a delayed stop circuit 204 whose output line 188 enables one of the flip-flop " and " gates 130, 156 to energize the brake 14 or 15 on the side opposite to the photo-electric cell and retard the edge of the second web. The discs 26, 34 may be replaced by perforations along the edges of the web.
