Abstract

1,148,890. Feeding sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 19 Sept., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 41652/66. Heading B6B. [Also in Division G5] Documents or tapes 10 (e.g. from cash registers &c.) are fed by a perforated belt 20 cooperating with a first vacuum chamber 26, while a second vacuum chamber 27 in communication with the first is arranged to hold flat any portions of the documents or tapes extending beyond the belt. As shown, a portion 28, with apertures 29 which may be adjustable, separates high and low vacuum chambers 26, 27, the latter being connectible with atmosphere through a spring-biased valve 32. The valve 32 is closed during feeding of narrow tapes &c. but opens progressively as more of the slots 24 are covered by wide tapes. The belt 20 is selectively braked or driven by energizing electromagnets (M 1 , M 2 ) (Fig. 1, not shown) arranged to rock an arm (47) carrying a brake pad (46) and roller (34) to press the belt against either a friction surface (45) or capstan (35). A tape 10 is driven by rollers (12) from a supply roll to the belt (20) where recorded information may be read by an optical scanner arranged to control the electromagnets to feed the tape stepwise.
